Institute for Farm Animal Conservation performs domestic and international breeding-gene conservation and coordination tasks for the protection of native Hungarian farm animal breeds (especially small animal breeds and the Pannonian bee) and professional support for the relevant domestic breeding organizations. Within this framework, it forms and coordinates a national gene conservation and gene bank network, creates and operates the related national and regional database and IT background.

It maintains and develops a Hungarian poultry gene bank, and carries out other gene bank, gene protection, gene conservation and gene rescue activities related to other particularly endangered Hungarian farm animal breeds.

It carries out research, development and innovation activities related to farm animal breed protection, gene conservation, gene bank activity and animal breeding, as well as rural development, education and awareness-raising activities.
